Fire Extinguishers – Supply, Maintenance & Compliance

Logic Fire & Security proposes to service and install your fire extinguishers to the current Irish Standard, IS 291:2015 + A1:2022, concerning selecting, commissioning installation, inspection and maintenance of portable fire extinguishers {PFEs}.

Our expert inspection, servicing, and maintenance protect your property and comply with safety regulations. Every PFE shall be discharge tested every 3 years or 4 years from the date of manufacture, whichever may come first, and the ensuing 3 years from the last previous date of test discharge.

One-third of all PFEs shall be discharged each year, so 100% of the extinguishers will have been test discharged at the end of the third year.

The test discharge shall be carried out by a competent person, as per requirements of this clause, and this shall be carried out at the time of annual maintenance as part of the maintenance programme.

PFOS & PFOA Fire-Fighting Foam Compliance: What You Need to Know

Fire-fighting foams previously contained per-fluorooctane-sulphonic acid (PFOS), a harmful substance banned since 2011 under Annex 1 of the EU Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) Regulation. After this ban, manufacturers introduced alternative Perfluorine compounds (PFOA/C8 fluorine chains). Still, these, too, were restricted, with a sales ban from July 2020 and a stock ban from July 2021 under Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2020/784.

KEY COMPLIANCE POINTS FOR FIRE-FIGHTING FOAM:

  • PFOS Ban (2011): Fire-fighting foams containing Per-Fluor-Octane-Sulphonic acid (PFOS) have been prohibited under Annex 1 of the EU Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) Regulation.
  • PFOA Restriction (2020-2021): Perfluorine compounds (PFOA/C8 fluorine chains) were restricted, with a sales ban from July 2020 and a stock ban from July 2021 under Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2020/784.
  • Existing Foam Stock: If your AFFF, FFFP, FP, or AFFF-AR foam stock is over three years old, it may contain PFOA and must be checked.
  • Usage Restrictions: PFOA-containing fire-fighting foam can only be used for liquid fires; it is strictly prohibited for training purposes.
  • Testing Limitations: Foam testing is only allowed if 100% of the used product can be collected. A liquid-tight bottom or pit is required to prevent environmental contamination.
  • Certification Risks: If full collection of used foam isn’t possible, testing is not permitted, which could affect fire safety certification.
  • Legislative Changes: Since January 2023, extinguishing foam, including PFOA, is prohibited for liquid fires if all released products cannot be contained or collected. From July 2025, there will be a total ban on fire-fighting foam containing PFOA.
